I Exist. - Blogger Zombie Walk 2011

Hey, there and welcome to this zombie-centric edition of Just Johnny...
Now, i must admit i didn't have a lot of time to do something special. If i had more time, i would have made a short movie i think. Hey, there is always next year right?! But for now we keep it simple with a little "Light" fiction. Put on your Dawn of the dead or Day of the dead soundtrack and turn off the lights. I call this one:

I Exist

I wish i could say i have had an eventful life, exciting and adventurous, whatever that means. But it was not. I've had a pretty normal childhood, my father wasn't a drunk, i never was abused. All the things most people, unfortunately go through, never happened to me.

Nothing happened in high-school either. I wasn't Mr. popular but i wasn't a geek either. Can you believe that I've never even seen a Star Wars film? I got good grades. Good enough to get by anyway. I never really excelled at anything, I once even had a high school teacher Mr. Villeburgh, say to me; ”You'll never amount to anything”. I wasn't a star at math. He thought it to be a good idea to rub that in. I never met that high school sweetheart, graduated and went to college. There is nothing to tell about that either, it wasn't any different. Well, I did get laid a couple of times.

After that i had the odd job here and there before i landed a decent job. In short, you might say i was as good as invisible. It bothered me at first but gradually I let go of expectations. This was as good as it was going to get. Then one morning, something happened and everything changed.

It was morning but not too early really. I felt a bit under the weather and had called work, to let them know, I’d be in a little later. I had already showered and I was dressed. I ate my breakfast as some soap got interrupted by a special news report. I vividly remember that the anchor was panicked about something. I never heard what he had to say though as I heard loud tire screeching outside in my street.

I went over to my window and saw a police car run over two people before the driver lost control and crashed in to a house. Some people were running by. Running away from something, but from what? To my surprise one of the persons that got run over tried to get up. Its face was a bloody mess. For some reason my next door neighbor went outside knelled in front of the person. “Don't try to get up! I'll call for help” he said. Then, with a swift movement the person on the floor grabbed my neighbor at the sides of his head and bit his nose off.

I forgot all about the other one. It crawled, dragging itself forward, its legs broken. It opened my neighbor's bathrobe and with his bare hands ripped his stomach open. I watched as they feasted on his guts. I was absolutely horrified, shocked and all i could say was; “Uh-Oh”.

Suddenly i heard a loud bang at my glass slide door. I was trembling. Then 2 figures crashed through, and fell right on to my floor. One of them slowly got up. It wore McDonald's clothing. It had fresh wounds on his neck and hand, behind it an older, fat man in a suit, limped after him. His lower lip missing. Both their eyes empty, milky white and lifeless.

There were two things i could do; freak out, and get eaten like my next door neighbor or fight. I literally scanned my kitchen. The thing closest to me was my broom. I swung the broom hitting the McDonald thing hard on the head. With a loud crack the broom broke. The thing stumbled and fell. The fat, suited one reached out for me. I ran and jammed the tip of the broken broom stick right through its left eye. It almost, ALMOST had a look of surprise on his face then it fell on to the floor and stayed there. The other slowly got back up. I had to get out of this place as i saw more of them shuffling their way towards me.

As i got outside the neighborhood was utter chaos. People running and crying. Some of these things were dragging people off and ate them alive. In the distance i saw the city burning. I don't even want to know what happened there. I almost got hit by a stray bullet. A man in his forties was riding a BMX bike, he clearly was too big for. He probably stole it from some kid. As he was riding it he fired his gun, wildly. He hit some of those things as they slowly surrounded him. They eventually grabbed him. I heard him scream as they ripped him apart.

The police car that crashed in to the house earlier must have hit a gas pipe or something, or it leaked gasoline i don't know. It exploded and knocked me on to the street. A few of of those things walked through the flames and kept on walking as if nothing had happened. They came for me.

I crawled away, tried to get up but for some reason my legs felt like rubber and lacked the strength to carry me. I felt the heat as they came closer, then my hand found a gun. Someone must have dropped it. At this point anything is possible. One of them already reached out his arms to me. I then fired the gun. 3 quick shots and I hit each of them in the head They fell like bags of sand to the ground. My legs found their strength again. I walked, shooting the one's that got too close. A few of them got knocked back a lot i hit in the head. That was the key. Hit them in the head.

I ran, a couple of them were following me and more and more joined the chase. As i was at the edge of my neighborhood I saw him. I stood still. Walking Death was right on my trail and I actually stood still, watching him. I was confused, was this some kind of cosmic blessing or joke? Perhaps God, or the universe was telling me something maybe it was Karma. I'll never know. All i know was that i was looking right at my old Match teacher; Mr. Villeburgh. He was older and a little fatter but i recognized that condescending look anywhere.

He was one of them too. His throat was ripped out and he shuffled towards me. At first I just wanted to shoot him but I decided against it. Didn't want to waste a bullet. You'll be surprised what you can find on the floor if you really look. I found this small garden axe near a crashed air ambulance. I picked it up, walked up to Mr. Villeburgh and split his head open with it. Black goo came pouring out of his head. And that was that. Strangely enough I had little to no emotion or feelings about it. I just knew it had to be done. After that I ran off as the city and the neighborhood behind me burned.

This was 3 weeks ago. Now, I have come to the realization that I’m pretty good at something. Pretty damn good actually. I'm good at killing. Well, technically it's not killing. You can't kill something that's already dead. I am surprised at my skill. The way I get rid of them can be called “spectacular”. I'm not one for bragging though. So I won't.

As I'm traveling, not to any place special in particular, it surprises me I haven't seen any living people. Still though, I finally feel alive. As if I’m doing something of worth now. As If I finally exist. Put here on this earth to battle this undead filth. I finally excel at something...the thing is, there is no one left alive to see it...

And there you have it. My contribution for 2011. A big thanks to Autumn Forest for letting me join at the last moment. Haven't had enough? Then go and visit these other blogs! They have all kinds of lovely undead content waiting for you. Thank you for visiting and have fun! What are you waiting for?! Go visit the other blogs! ;-)

This was a great piece of zombie fiction! I guess you never really know who's going to save your ass (or, uh, shoot you in the head) in the zombie apocalypse until it happens ;D

Wow, I really enjoyed that, I think you should do a follow up story! ;)

Hi Fran, i'm very pleased you like it. Actually, this is a one shot but i could do a sequel of sorts. Same world, different character...or who knows, i could just do a continuation of this story. So many choices! I need to think about it but thank for your comment :-)

Very nice. I especially liked the McDonald's zombie. :) I enjoyed the main character as well; very realistic and great character development.
